Russian strikes on Zaporizhzhia and Kyiv kill five, injure dozens

At least five people were killed and 21 injured in Russian attacks on Zaporizhzhia and Kyiv on August 10, 2026, Ukrainian authorities and local officials said.

The dead and the bulk of the casualties were reported in Zaporizhzhia: five residents were killed and 20 wounded after strikes that began around 00:30 local time. Kyiv reported one injured person.

“We heard about 10 explosions, I think they were from ballistic missiles. Then there was one powerful explosion that shook the whole building like an earthquake,” a local journalist in Zaporizhzhia told reporters, describing the first wave of strikes and a later blast that appeared to be caused by a guided aerial bomb.

Damage, fires and power outages

Ivan Fedorov, governor of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, said the city was hit with ballistic missiles and guided aerial bombs. Houses and other buildings were damaged, fires broke out and electricity supplies were interrupted. After a short lull, air-raid sirens were sounded again in Zaporizhzhia amid fears of follow-up drone attacks.

In Kyiv, several strong explosions were heard, including blasts near the city centre. Mayor Vitali Klitschko warned residents the city was under attack and urged people to shelter. Medical teams were dispatched to the Shevchenkivskyi district, where officials subsequently found a damaged warehouse.

During the summer months Russia has stepped up its missile campaign against Ukraine; shortages of air-defence systems have increased the vulnerability of Ukrainian cities, particularly to ballistic missiles.

Journalists on the ground and social media posts, including a message from Dima Zapo, documented the aftermath and the toll on civilians: "Five people are already confirmed dead and 20 people have been injured. Sadly, the number of injured continues to rise. These are the horrific consequences of yet another ruzzian attack on Zaporizhzhia."
