Russian court fines Google and Telegram about €270,000
Tagansky District Court in Moscow ruled that the platforms failed to remove prohibited content; Telegram fined 18.4 million rubles (~€191,000), Google 7.6 million rubles (~€79,000).
Russian judges have ordered Google and Telegram to pay fines totaling roughly €270,000 for failing to remove content prohibited under Russian law.
The decision was handed down today by the Tagansky District Court in Moscow, following lawsuits filed against both technology companies.
Telegram was fined 18.4 million rubles, the equivalent of about €191,000, while Google was ordered to pay 7.6 million rubles, or roughly €79,000.
The ruling and the fines
The court found that both platforms did not comply with legal requirements to take down material that Russian authorities consider banned. The combined penalties add up to approximately €270,000.
Russian regulators have previously imposed similar sanctions on foreign social platforms. Instagram, YouTube, X and TikTok have all been fined in recent years for failing to remove illegal content or for breaching domestic rules. The Russian authorities also continue to maintain a ban on Telegram within the country.
