The top seed edged past Sonego after almost five hours on court in a match that swung repeatedly in momentum and energy.

Zverev faced the brink of elimination in the fourth set but produced a decisive break in the 11th game to level the match and force a fifth set.
The decider was tense from the start: both players missed early chances to break before Zverev secured a crucial break in the fifth game and then held serve to close out the win. His opponent is listed 89th in the world.
