Sashka Petkovska — the Macedonian voice who died in a 1983 road crash

Sashka Petkovska was one of the most recognisable voices to emerge from the former Yugoslav music scene, building a following across the Balkans before her life was cut short at 32.

Born in Zrenjanin and raised in Bitola — long known locally as "the city of consuls" — Petkovska attracted attention as a child for her melodious voice and stage presence. At 19 she broke through after debuting at the Subotica festival and winning the interpretation prize with the song "Eden poraz ne e kraj".

Her talent reached beyond Yugoslavia: she represented Macedonia in the younger artists' section at the Sanremo festival (Cantagiro), where she finished third. Over a short career she recorded a string of songs that became enduring favourites, including "Bakni me", "Nikogash, nikogash", "Chao adio", "Zapri srce" and "Grizha".

Death on tour and a daughter's memory

The fatal accident occurred on August 31, 1983, on the Kumanovo–Sveti Nikole road during a tour. A heavy truck struck the vehicle carrying the artists; nine people died, among them Petkovska, at the age of 32. The news stunned audiences across the region and left a gap in the music scene that has not been filled.

Her daughter Sandra was four years old when she lost her mother. In later interviews Sandra said: "I don't have many memories of my mother, because I was a four-year-old girl when she died, but I know all her songs. A part of her lives in me; we keep all her albums and photographs at home and listen to the music. It's good that her music is remembered and that this contributes to preserving quality Macedonian music."

More than four decades after her death, Sashka Petkovska's recordings continue to move listeners. She is remembered not only as a leading musical diva and a style icon of the 1970s, but also as an artist whose early loss froze a bright voice in time.
