SDSM warns: "Half of North Macedonia poisoned, but those responsible are still not held accountable" — seven towns and several villages without drinking water

On 31 July 2026 SDSM publicly warned that large parts of the country are affected by problems with drinking water and that institutions are not acting quickly enough.

"Half of North Macedonia poisoned, but those responsible are still not held accountable", the party said, adding that "seven towns and several villages have no drinking water." SDSM demanded an immediate response and full transparency from the Ministry of Health and public water utilities.

The opposition demands testing and accountability

Representatives of SDSM told journalists they have reports of interruptions and suspicions of contamination in several municipalities and are calling on the Ministry of Health and public water utilities to publish laboratory results and plans for urgent interventions. The party insists on rapid and public checks of water sources and on bringing criminal charges if negligence is determined.

So far the response from central institutions has not been coordinated, SDSM says. The opposition warned that continued indecision increases the danger to public health and called on mayors to provide daily information to citizens.

Health experts warn that without verified laboratory data and clear communication from the authorities, rumors can lead to panic. SDSM announced parliamentary oversight mechanisms and is calling for the formation of a cross-party commission to investigate the situation.

The situation is dynamic as residents in affected areas seek alternative water sources, and local authorities consider emergency measures to restore safe water supply.
