SDSM: Mickoski is blocking the EU path because he fears the European prosecutor and Laura Kövesi

SDSM accused Hristijan Mickoski on Friday of stalling North Macedonia's path to the European Union because he fears the reach of the European public prosecutor and its head, Laura Kövesi.

At a press conference, SDSM spokesperson and Executive Board member Bogdanka Kuzeska said Brussels is preparing rules that will apply to all candidate countries, including joining the Office of the European Public Prosecutor before formal membership.

What SDSM says it would change

Kuzeska warned that the new rules would close informal lines of influence inside the judiciary. She said, in translated remarks, "the time is coming when investigations will no longer be ordered by phone."

She compared the effect of European oversight with recent developments elsewhere in the region. Kuzeska argued that, in EU members, even high-level ministers can be detained: "In Hungary, so far two ministers from Viktor Orbán's government have been arrested. This is what it looks like when you are in the Union and when the authorities are not an organized criminal group. That's why the brigand closes the door. That's why signposts are being given to Montenegro, Albania, Moldova, Ukraine," she said.

Kuzeska also attacked Mickoski's public image and diplomatic conduct, saying his behaviour abroad signals a lack of commitment to EU accession. She added: "The message Mickoski wants to send is that he, and with him Macedonia, is not interested in the EU. This is because there are no reforms. There is no progress. There is no accountability. This is what it looks like when such a person represents us in the world. Dishevelled, with his hands in his pockets, hunting for a photo-op. That's how a man who calls his own people 'scum', and considers himself an 'institution' and an elite — probably because of his watch and suit — presents us."

Summing up, the party reiterated that European integration brings uniform rules and the rule of law, and repeated its warning that "Power will soon return to the hands of the people. This group will be held accountable."
