Former Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto signs for LA Galaxy

Former Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto has agreed to join LA Galaxy, the club announced on August 9, 2026. The 34-year-old arrives as a free agent from Como and has signed a one-year deal with an option that could extend his stay through June 2028.

The move returns Roberto to a high-profile environment after his latest spell in Italy. LA Galaxy described the signing as an addition that brings experience and versatility to their midfield group.

Contract and role

Roberto joined the Galaxy from Como as a free agent and committed to a one-year contract, with the club holding an option to keep him until June 2028. The agreement gives LA Galaxy flexibility while adding a player with a long track record at top level.

"Sergi brings a combination of leadership, technical quality, tactical intelligence and championship experience that few players have," said Will Kunz, general manager of LA Galaxy. "He was a key member of some of the biggest teams of his generation and understands not only what is required to win, but what it means to be a winning team. Sergi's character, positional versatility and leadership will be invaluable, and we are excited to welcome him and his family to LA Galaxy."

Roberto spent the bulk of his career at Barcelona, where he played from 2010 until 2024. His ability to operate across several positions in midfield — and occasionally in wider roles — has been a hallmark of his career.

LA Galaxy expect Roberto's experience and leadership to bolster their squad as they look to compete domestically and in regional competitions. The club said they are pleased to welcome both the player and his family to Los Angeles.
