North Macedonia sends police helicopter to fight wildfire in Kosovo for first time
A Ministry of Internal Affairs helicopter is conducting aerial firefighting in Hani i Elezit after Kosovo requested aid.
North Macedonia has for the first time deployed state resources abroad: a police helicopter is fighting a large wildfire in Kosovo after Pristina requested assistance.
The move was coordinated immediately after the request reached Skopje. Officials in the country’s Center for Crisis Management worked directly with other agencies to mobilize assets, while the Main Staff was led by Stojanche Angelov during the activation.
A helicopter from the Ministry of Internal Affairs is currently conducting aerial firefighting operations in the Hani i Elezit area, providing water drops and aerial support to ground crews tackling the blaze.
Interstate firefighting aid
Authorities said this marks the first time the Republic of North Macedonia has used its own state-operated equipment outside its borders as part of bilateral emergency assistance. The action follows Kosovo’s formal request for help amid the spreading fire.
Officials emphasized that crews remain in close coordination with Kosovo teams on the ground, and that the deployment is being managed to ensure both operational effectiveness and safety.
Skopje officials also said they will continue monitoring the situation and stand ready to expand support if Kosovo requests further assistance.
