Xi Jinping to make state visit to the United States from 23 to 25 September

Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the United States this week, Beijing confirmed, saying the two leaders will discuss global peace amid the war in Iran.

"At the invitation of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the United States from 23 to 25 September," the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Historic timing and agenda

Beijing noted that this will be Xi's first state visit to the United States since September 2015, when he traveled at the invitation of then-President Barack Obama. He later met Donald Trump during Trump's first term in 2017 and met Joe Biden at the 2023 APEC leaders' summit, but that visit was not a state visit.

"The exchange of visits by the two presidents within half a year will represent a historically significant milestone," the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Guo Dziakun told reporters in Beijing.

Guo said Xi "will have an in-depth exchange of views with President Trump on the main issues related to bilateral relations and world peace and development." The ministry added that diplomacy at the head-of-state level plays an irreplaceable role in steering China–U.S. ties strategically and that China will work with the United States to enrich dimensions of a constructive relationship based on strategic stability, strengthen dialogue and cooperation, manage differences properly and contribute to global peace, stability and prosperity.

U.S. media report that Trump will likely greet Xi on the tarmac at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland near Washington. Xi is expected to travel with senior officials and business figures, including representatives from electric-vehicle maker BYD and smart-manufacturing group Xiaomi.
