Xi arrives in Washington and urges cooperation: "China and the US should be partners, not rivals"
On a three‑day visit, Xi told officials that China and the United States "should be partners, not rivals."
Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Washington on September 24, 2026, and immediately called for closer cooperation with the United States, saying that the two countries should be partners rather than adversaries.
Xi landed at Joint Base Andrews, where he was greeted by U.S. President Donald Trump. Xi's wife, Peng Liyuan, was received separately by First Lady Melania Trump.
The trip is a three-day visit at President Trump’s invitation. An official meeting between the two presidents at the White House is scheduled for today.
Message of cooperation and shared interests
Speaking upon arrival, Xi told assembled officials and journalists: "Our two countries should be partners, not rivals," and stressed that "the Chinese and American peoples have long maintained friendly contacts, and their interests are closely intertwined."
He added that the slogans "the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation" and "Make America Great Again" can "go hand in hand, complement each other and benefit the world." Xi also said he looks forward to meeting people from different sectors of American life to deepen friendship between the countries.
