Swedish and Finnish fighter jets were scrambled yesterday to intercept Russian military aircraft in international airspace over the Gulf of Finland, the Finnish Air Force said today.
Joint mission under bilateral framework
The operation was carried out under the Finnish‑Swedish framework for joint monitoring and safeguarding of the skies of both countries, the statement said.
Fighter aircraft from the combat aviation units of both nations tracked and identified the Russian formation, which included a transport plane and several fighters, Finnish military authorities added.
The intercept took place in international airspace above the Gulf of Finland and involved standard identification and escort procedures used during such missions.
Finnish officials provided the brief account of the response but did not release further operational details or timings.
