Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova to first-graders: Learn, be curious, make friends and avoid violence

President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova opened the new 2026–2027 school year in Ohrid by attending the first lesson with first-graders at Elementary School "St. Clement of Ohrid", together with Ohrid Mayor Kiril Pecakov.

Addressing the children, Siljanovska-Davkova urged them to invest in their own learning: the more they know, the more they will understand the world, become tolerant and independent. She encouraged curiosity, asking questions and cultivating knowledge as the path to personal growth.

Lessons beyond grades

She told pupils that competition should be directed not merely at grades but at gaining knowledge and achievement, and that developing critical thinking and friendships with classmates and teachers is equally important.

On that note the president said: "Stay away from violence. Be friends with your teachers and build friendships with your classmates."

Siljanovska-Davkova, who was born in Ohrid, said she had wished to return to childhood and to start school in an environment like the one she saw, and she paid tribute to the teaching profession as the most noble of occupations.

Mayor Kiril Pecakov called the first school day a special moment and told the youngest pupils that, besides reading and writing, school teaches the value of friendship, respect and mutual help. He addressed the children directly: "Be curious, diligent and smiling, and enjoy every school day." He also urged parents to support their children’s education and asked teachers to continue sharing knowledge with dedication.

The ceremonial reception included a short programme for the newcomers. Wishes for a successful, fulfilling and happy school year were extended to all pupils in Ohrid, with hopes for new friendships and lasting school memories.

According to data from the Ministry of Education and Science, 14,952 first-graders enrolled nationwide this year.
