Siljanovska‑Davkova: No one has the right to revise our history

President Gordana Siljanovska‑Davkova reiterated in Skopje that antifascism and the legacy of the partisan movement and ASNOM form a permanent element of North Macedonia’s founding identity, and she warned against attempts to reinterpret that history.

Speaking at an event in Skopje on 2 August 2026, Siljanovska‑Davkova praised the wartime generation for embedding antifascism into the newly created state and stressed that freedom was won by Macedonians themselves, not handed to them.
“We owe nothing to anyone for the hard‑won state, which is precisely why no one has the right to revise our national history,” she said, framing her remarks as a defence of the country’s founding narrative.
The president also singled out Metodija Andonov‑Chento as “one of the greatest sons of Macedonia,” and used the occasion to call for greater investment in young people as the surest way to preserve the state.
Siljanovska‑Davkova noted the youth of the original ASNOM delegates as a reminder of the role younger generations played in state‑building: she said nearly half of ASNOM participants were under 30.
Her comments come amid ongoing debates over historical interpretation and national identity, and signal the presidency’s position that the founding wartime institutions and their anti‑fascist orientation should remain central to North Macedonia’s official memory.
