Severe storm hits Poland: nearly 20,000 households without power

A strong storm swept across large parts of Poland, leaving flooded streets, fallen trees and widespread damage to buildings and basements.

Since midnight Polish firefighters have carried out more than 4,000 interventions, the State Fire Service said, with crews mainly removing uprooted trees, securing damaged roofs and pumping water from inundated streets, buildings and cellars.

Evacuations and emergency readiness

As the weather forecast warned of further deterioration, authorities evacuated 12 scout camps as a precaution; participants and staff were moved to safe, permanent facilities. So far there are no reports of injuries.

Poland’s Minister of Defence, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, said the Territorial Defence Forces remain on heightened alert to assist local authorities and emergency services with cleanup and recovery.

The situation is compounded by electricity outages: around 19,400 households are currently without power, with the hardest hit areas near Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Zgierz and Piotrków Trybunalski.
