Simon Trpčeski enchants Koufonisia: classical music under the Cyclades sky
The Macedonian pianist enchanted the Koufonisia Classical festival with an outdoor performance; he thanked organisers and said his next stop is Romania.
Simon Trpčeski delivered an open‑air recital on the tiny Greek isle of Koufonisia, bringing his signature virtuosity to the Koufonisia Classical festival in the Cyclades and earning warm applause from the crowd under the Aegean sky.
Sharing photographs from the island, Trpčeski summarised the experience in his own words: "I had a unique experience at the Koufonisia Classical festival in the Cyclades! I thank Cornelius Michailidis and the whole organising team for the excellent trip and stay on this magical island, where people sincerely love music. To another sea, Romania we arrive!"
Stage, acclaim and modest beginnings
The pianist remains one of Macedonia's most visible cultural ambassadors: international critics and audiences have followed a career that includes performances for world figures and royal guests — among them a meeting with the then‑Prince Charles — and glowing coverage from publications such as The Times, which called him "an abnormally normal pianist." Yet Trpčeski often points back to his roots.
He grew up in a household of five family members in an apartment of just 56 square metres. The road from those modest beginnings to the world’s top concert halls, he says, was paved with discipline, sacrifice and the steady support of his relatives.
That personal pillar of support is his wife, Daniela Trpčeska, a psychologist whom he credits both with keeping the household steady and with giving him the calm he needs between tours. The couple, who married in 2008 after a ten‑year relationship, are parents to three children: daughter Lara and twins Andrej and Stefan. Lara has already represented North Macedonia at the Junior Eurovision stage.
