Skopje man with 3.29‰ caused traffic accident — no injuries

A man from Skopje drove with a blood alcohol concentration of 3.29‰ and caused a traffic accident; fortunately, there were no injuries. The incident was reported on 07 August, 2026 11:30.
Police intervened at the scene and confirmed the driver’s level of alcohol in his blood as 3.29‰. Authorities say the collision did not result in bodily harm to other road users.
Medical evidence included with the report reminds that with 2.5‰ alcohol in the blood, serious impairments to mental and physical functions already occur, and the risk of choking during vomiting or injuries from falls or other accidents increases. At 3‰ loss of consciousness and difficult awakening are possible; 3.5‰ can lead to coma, and 4‰ or more frequently produce coma and often death due to respiratory failure, very low blood pressure and asphyxiation during vomiting.
Legal consequences
Under the Law on Road Traffic Safety, penalties vary depending on the amount of alcohol found in a driver’s blood:
- Up to 0.50‰ (for those with zero tolerance): heavy monetary fines and a driving ban.
- From 0.51‰ to 1.00‰: a fine of 225 euros (in denar equivalent) and 40 negative points.
- From 1.01‰ to 1.50‰: a fine of 275 euros and 50 negative points.
- Over 1.50‰: a fine of 375 euros and 60 negative points, and mandatory detention at a police station until sobriety is regained.
For all offences above the legal limit a temporary prohibition on operating a motor vehicle is also imposed for a period of 3 to 12 months.
