Skopje to host European Judo Cup 2026 with over 440 athletes

Skopje will again host top European and world judo competitors at the European Judo Cup — Skopje 2026, scheduled for 19–20 September. Organizers report that more than 440 athletes from over 40 countries across 4 continents have registered so far, a figure that far exceeds last year’s turnout.

The numbers underline growing recognition of Skopje as a reliable international judo venue: the previous European Cup held here drew about 300 competitors, making this year’s entry list noticeably larger.

Expectations and significance

Organizers say the tournament carries extra weight because results will count toward Olympic qualification, which has attracted many of the continent’s and the world’s best judoka. Several national delegations arrive with large squads — Russia, Germany and Italy are among the biggest, each registering more than 50 competitors.

“We can safely say that this event exceeds all our expectations, because the number of competitors is not only significantly greater than the same event held here before, but is larger than all European Cups in any city across Europe. I would add that the best European and world judoka have already announced their arrival, because the results will be counted for the Olympic Games, so everyone will strive to achieve the best possible placing. The top people of European judo are coming, six ambassadors have already been announced who want to follow the fights, so we expect a top judo event,” said Vladimir Trpanovski, president of the Judo Federation of North Macedonia.

Beyond competition results, the Judo Federation of North Macedonia views the tournament as proof of its organizational capacity and a chance to strengthen the country’s profile on the European and global judo scene.

The event runs over two days with international delegations, coaches and officials expected to travel to Skopje for the matches and related activities.
