Slovakia to visit Moscow on October 26 to renew cooperation with Russia

Slovakia will send a delegation to Moscow on October 26 to restart cooperation with Russia, chiefly to discuss deliveries of Russian energy and to reopen bilateral channels that were largely paused after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The meeting will be held as a session of the Russian–Slovak intergovernmental commission for economic, scientific and technical cooperation, the Slovak foreign ministry announced. Officials said the talks aim to restore dialogue that has been limited since 2022.

"The meeting will focus on energy, agriculture, environment, sport and culture," the ministry said, listing the topics that will be on the agenda.

Political context

Observers view the initiative as the latest sign that Bratislava is diverging from the positions of some of its European Union and NATO partners by re-engaging with Moscow on practical matters such as energy supplies.

Slovakia has previously relied on Russian energy to varying degrees, and reviving formal talks with Russian counterparts could affect wider EU debates about energy security and dependencies.

The scheduled October 26 session of the intergovernmental commission will cover energy alongside agriculture, the environment, sport and culture, according to the ministry's announcement.
