Messi returns to Inter Miami five days after his father's funeral

Lionel Messi returned to the pitch five days after burying his father, Jorge, who died one day before the funeral at the age of 68 after a long illness. The Argentina forward came on for Inter Miami in a Leagues Cup match on Thursday, but could not prevent a 3-2 home defeat to Mexican side León despite his team leading 2-1 earlier in the game.

Fans greeted him with emotion as he entered at the start of the second half

Messi replaced a teammate at the beginning of the second half, prompting a wave of emotion among the spectators who had gathered despite the recent family bereavement. Many in the stands were visibly moved; there were tears of joy and relief when he stepped onto the field.

For supporters and for Messi himself the moment mattered more than the final score. "INCREDIBLE: Lionel Messi makes his entrance with Inter Miami, not even a week after his father's death. 🥹💗" — Instant Foot ⚽️ (@lnstantFoot) August 13, 2026.

Once on the field he immediately drew attention from opposing players, who surrounded him, offered words of comfort and appeared to protect him from hard challenges. Those gestures were widely noted by fans and commentators.

Although Messi was unable to change the result, his return was the defining moment of the night: a high-profile player choosing to play through grief, in a game that for many became as much about solidarity as about competition.
