Five days after his father's burial, Messi came on at the start of the second half as Inter Miami lost 3-2 at home to León in the Leagues Cup.
Lionel Messi returned to the pitch five days after burying his father, Jorge, who died one day before the funeral at the age of 68 after a long illness. The Argentina forward came on for Inter Miami in a Leagues Cup match on Thursday, but could not prevent a 3-2 home defeat to Mexican side León despite his team leading 2-1 earlier in the game.

Messi replaced a teammate at the beginning of the second half, prompting a wave of emotion among the spectators who had gathered despite the recent family bereavement. Many in the stands were visibly moved; there were tears of joy and relief when he stepped onto the field.
