Spotify to label artists created with artificial intelligence

Spotify will begin marking certain artist profiles to indicate when a musician’s identity may have been created using artificial intelligence. The label, called "AI Persona," is scheduled to start appearing on selected profiles from mid-September and will alert listeners that "identity of the musician may be generated by artificial intelligence and does not represent a real person."

According to Spotify, the measure aims to give listeners "greater transparency" about what they are hearing. The company says the "AI Persona" badge will be visible on an artist’s profile banner and in the About section, and it will also appear as a note in search results and next to tracks inside playlists.

Spotify added that artists marked with the label will be excluded from personalized recommendations for users, unless those users already follow the artist.

How the label will be used and what it means

The rollout will begin on a subset of profiles rather than universally, with the service deploying the badge from mid-September. Spotify frames the change as a way to help listeners distinguish between human-made and AI-generated musical identities.

Industry observers have raised questions about how platforms should balance innovation in AI-generated content with transparency for listeners and protection for human creators. Spotify’s new label is a step toward disclosure; how effective it will be in practice will depend on how consistently it is applied and whether additional rules or verification processes are introduced.

For listeners, the immediate effect is informational: from mid-September, some artist pages and search results will carry the "AI Persona" mark and an explicit note about the artist's non-human origin, and those tagged profiles generally will not surface in personalized recommendations unless already followed.
