Serbia will try to recruit Matej Gashtarov
Football Association of Serbia confirms it is monitoring the Red Star midfielder and will try to persuade him to represent Serbia.
Serbia's football authorities have placed young midfielder Matej Gashtarov on their radar and say they will try to persuade him to represent Serbia at international level, Serbian officials announced on 7 September 2026.
Ranko Stojic, director for strategy and development at the Football Association of Serbia (FSS), described Gashtarov as a modern central midfielder and confirmed that the association is following the player's progress closely.

"Gashtarov is the prototype of a modern central midfielder. We especially like him for the position of the deep-lying playmaker. We will see what we can do, we will try," Stojic said.
Gashtarov, who is part of Red Star Belgrade's squad, has attracted attention recently with his performances for the club, prompting the Serbian body to track his development.
At the same time, Gashtarov is already included in the plans of the North Macedonia national team: coach Goce Sedloski called him up for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, signaling that Skopje counts on the 20-something midfielder for the campaign.
For now, FSS officials say they will explore options to persuade the player to switch allegiance, while North Macedonia appears ready to integrate him into its senior setup.
