Record price at Deauville — yearling sells for €4.6 million

A one-year-old thoroughbred foal bred by Ecurie des Monceaux set a new price record at the prestigious Deauville yearling sales, selling for €4.6 million.

The foal, described by auction organisers as belonging to the Normande line, was born to the mare Deadly Nightshade and the stallion Wooton Bassett. It was purchased jointly by Irish billionaire MV Mandžer and the American stable White Birch Farm.

Auction officials said the single lot "has once again written itself into the record books," adding it represented "surpassing the previous record of three million euros, set last year."

Yearlings at these sales are one-year-old purebred Thoroughbreds intended for flat racing. The August dispersals in Deauville, on France's north-west coast, rank among Europe's most selective and draw buyers from across the globe.

Organisers reported that 236 yearlings changed hands during the auctions for a combined sum exceeding €65 million, with an average price close to €278,000.
