NEOM stadium at risk as delays and cuts threaten €2.5bn project

One of Saudi Arabia’s most ambitious sporting projects — the futuristic NEOM stadium — is at serious risk of never being completed, raising doubts about a landmark venue that had been billed as a highlight of the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

The scheme carries an estimated price tag of €2.5 billion and envisioned a suspended stadium rising some 350 metres above ground with seating for 46,000 spectators. The arena was designed as an integral element of The Line, the linear city being built within the larger NEOM development.

The proposal aimed to introduce a new generation of sports architecture: a visually striking facility in an unprecedented elevated position intended to deliver scenes “never before seen at global stadiums.”

Delays and budget cuts cast doubt

Construction has already suffered significant delays, and reports of reductions in funding for NEOM-linked projects have multiplied. Those developments have prompted growing scepticism among planners and observers that the NEOM stadium will be completed in the form originally planned.

If Saudi Arabia ultimately abandons the project, it would represent a major setback for initial plans tied to The Line and the wider NEOM programme. There has been no definitive confirmation that construction is cancelled, but the combination of setbacks and lower investment levels has moved the project into a highly uncertain position.

The stadium had been expected to play a prominent role during the 2034 World Cup, which Saudi Arabia is due to host, and its fate will be watched closely as the kingdom adjusts the scope and timing of its flagship infrastructure investments.
