Stevcho Jakimovski urgently transferred from prison to hospital after infection worsens

Stevcho Jakimovski, the former mayor of Karposh and leader of the GROM party, was urgently transferred from prison to a hospital after his condition deteriorated, medical personnel say.

Postoperative infection and hospital treatment

Prison health staff determined that a postoperative infection had worsened and required immediate medical intervention and inpatient care. Hospital doctors took over Jakimovski's treatment after the transfer.

There are no official public updates yet about his current condition or the planned course of treatment. Authorities have not released further medical details.

Jakimovski has been serving a custodial sentence in Skopje Prison since mid-July. He entered "Shutka" and was expected to be released after New Year.

Jakimovski has publicly acknowledged suffering from cancer of the lungs and the bladder and has been receiving regular oncological treatments. Earlier this year, demonstrators gathered in an effort to stop him being taken to prison; video footage from those protests showed participants who arrived prepared with tools.

Hospital and prison officials have said only that he was moved for urgent care; further information is expected as doctors assess his condition.
