Susan Sarandon arrested at protest before Benjamin Netanyahu's UN speech
The actress and fellow demonstrators were detained as dozens of delegates left the UN hall ahead of the Israeli prime minister’s address.
Hollywood actor Susan Sarandon was among those detained during a protest in New York held ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the United Nations General Assembly. Video of the arrests, which also included American actress Hannah Einbinder, circulated on social media before Netanyahu took the podium.
Dozens of delegates left the General Assembly hall as Netanyahu began his speech, a public demonstration of protest that unfolded just before the prime minister spoke.
Netanyahu's response and targets
During his address Netanyahu labelled those who left the hall "moral cowards." He used the speech to praise Donald Trump and to criticize Qatar and Turkey; he also called Turkey's leader "tyrant."
The unrest around the visit included references to New York Mayor Zorhan Mamdani, who had earlier described the Israeli prime minister as a war criminal, according to the account of the day's events.
Authorities moved to remove several demonstrators from the area before the speech; footage of the detentions spread online, prompting renewed debate about the protests and the response by security forces at the UN complex.
