Saint Macrina: the feast on August 1, a miracle and a day without heavy work

On August 1 the Orthodox faithful commemorate Saint Macrina, known in church tradition as the elder sister of Basil the Great and Gregory of Nyssa.

According to the story preserved in hagiography and popular memory, Macrina was engaged in her youth but the young man died suddenly. Convinced that he remained alive before God, she vowed never to marry and later, together with her mother Emilia, took monastic vows. The two women established a small women’s monastic community where they supported themselves by manual labor and devoted their days to prayer and spiritual discipline.

Miracle, modesty and a day of rest

The narrative about Macrina’s healing is central to her folk reputation. When a severe wound opened on her chest she refused medical help out of modesty, unwilling to have another’s eyes on her body. One night, moved by tears and firm faith, she mixed earth with her own tears and anointed the wound; by the next morning the injury had completely healed. Out of humility she concealed the event even from her mother.

Because of that episode and other details of her life, in popular tradition Saint Macrina is seen as a protector of the sick—particularly those suffering from deep, hidden or seemingly incurable ailments—and as a guardian of women’s honour, chastity and family peace.

Customs connected to her feast reflect those associations: on August 1 it is commonly held that people should avoid hard physical labor and working the soil. The day is meant for prayer and moral restraint; believers say that those who abstain from sinful deeds and strenuous work and spend the day in prayer may receive relief and healing.

Many end the observance with an appeal to the saint in the traditional form: "Holy Mother Macrina, pray to God for us!"
