Boos for Julián Álvarez as Atlético draw 2-2 with Villarreal
Atlético Madrid were held to a 2-2 draw by Villarreal in the second round of La Liga, a match overshadowed by loud boos directed at forward Julián Álvarez during the team presentation at the Wanda Metropolitano on 23 August 2026. The game itself finished level at 2-2. Atlético’s goals were credited to Marko Pubilj and Diego Simeone, while Villarreal’s Moréna and Mikautadze each scored from the penalty spot.

Fans voice displeasure at Álvarez

Tensions around Álvarez followed developments over the summer, when the Argentine striker expressed a desire to leave Atlético and join Barcelona — a move the club refused to sanction. That discontent was clear before kickoff, as supporters greeted the players’ formal introduction with persistent whistles and jeers aimed at Álvarez. Diego Simeone initially intended to bring Álvarez on around the 60th minute, but changed his mind and returned the player to the substitutes’ bench. Four minutes later, however, Álvarez did enter the match, replacing Marko Pubilj amid even louder whistling from the stands. On the field both teams had chances; Atlético recovered from behind to equalise but could not find a winner. The result leaves Atlético still seeking a clear statement after the summer transfer saga surrounding their forward.
