Father dies after falling into ravine near Savica waterfall, 7‑year‑old son critically injured

A father died and his young son was seriously injured after both fell into a deep ravine near the Savica waterfall in Bohinj, Slovenia, authorities say. The father, 44, plunged about 60 metres while attempting to reach his seven‑year‑old son.
The incident happened after a family of four — visiting the well‑known waterfall — stopped to rest on a designated area. According to police in Kranj, the child moved away from the parents and moments later the family heard his cries.
Rescue teams rushed in from nearby training
A mountain rescue team from Bohinj, which happened to be conducting training exercises nearby, descended into the Savica riverbed to reach the scene. They recovered the father at the bottom of the ravine; he had sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the site.
The boy was found in the riverbed and was flown by a Slovenian police helicopter to the University Clinical Centre Ljubljana for urgent treatment. Officials describe his condition as serious.
Commenting on the attempt to save both lives, the rescue service said: "We used all our skill to save one young life, but for the older one, unfortunately, there was no salvation. Our sincere condolences to the family."
The police in Kranj have opened an investigation to establish the full circumstances of the accident.
