The body of a 71-year-old man from Skopje identified by initials M.M. was recovered from Lake Prespa on 11 August 2026 by a specialized diving team, the Ministry of Interior reported.

The recovery took place at 13:15 near the tourist settlement Pretor. The man had been reported missing on 8 August 2026 at about 12:20 to the Bitola Police Department after witnesses said he jumped from a boat near the village of Slivnica, in the Resen municipality, to retrieve oars that had fallen into the water.

Search details

Two fishermen who reached the shore by the Resen village of Slivnica told police that two of their companions remained in the lake. According to the report, M.M., aged 71 and from Skopje, jumped into the water around 12:20 on 8 August and did not come back out.

Another fisherman, B.J., also 71 and from Skopje, remained in the boat; because of wind the boat drifted toward Kran to about one kilometre from the shore.

Police officers responded to the scene and the search involved a specialized diving team from SAE "Tigar".

By order of the public prosecutor the body was transferred to Bitola Clinical Hospital for autopsy. Authorities have not released further details as the investigation continues.
