At least 10 dead after two trains collide south of Madrid

Madrid, October 28, 2026 — At least 10 people have died after two trains collided south of Madrid on Wednesday, regional officials said, and authorities warned the death toll is likely to rise.

The crash occurred on the high-speed line between Los Yébenes and Urda, where a Renfe service and a train operated by Iryo came into a head-on or near head-on collision, according to statements from regional spokespeople and the rail operator ADIF.

Emergency services said they have deployed all available resources to the scene. A spokesperson for the Spanish emergency services said, "all resources are currently deployed", listing "several fire crews, three helicopters and two mobile intensive care units."

Ester Padilla, the regional government spokesperson for Castilla–La Mancha, gave passenger figures for the two trains: she said the Iryo train was carrying 146 passengers and one baby, while the Renfe service had 397 passengers on board.

Padilla added bluntly that "The number of confirmed deaths, which currently stands at 10, will almost certainly increase" and warned that "The situation will worsen."

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he was "shocked by the serious rail accident" and is in constant contact with the transport minister as emergency teams work to reach the injured and recover the victims.
