Teen hiker, 19, dies on Triglav after slipping into a crevasse

A 19-year-old hiker died yesterday morning on Triglav, the highest peak of the Julian Alps in Slovenia, after slipping and falling into a crevasse, authorities reported.

Accident on the Tomišek route

The young man was returning from the Kredarica mountain hut toward the Vrat valley when he lost his footing at the start of the Tomišek path and fell into a void. Due to severe injuries, he died at the scene.

Rescuers moved the body by a military helicopter, which later returned to pick up other hikers who had been ascending with the victim.

Responding units included the helicopter mountain rescue service of Slovenia (GRZS) from Brnik. At the scene a police officer from the mountain police unit conducted an on-site inspection.

Mountain rescuers from GRS Mojstrana also took part in the rescue operation. Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.
