A 16-year-old footballer, Asllan Gjana, died on the morning of Tuesday, September 29, 2026, after suffering a severe head injury during a local match on the Greek island of Thasos, club and local reports said.
The incident occurred during a fixture between Vyronas Kavala and Ajantas Panagia, held under the auspices of the Municipal Football Union of Kavala. According to accounts from the match, Gjana lost his balance in an aerial duel and struck his head against a perimeter fence that was positioned very close to the touchline.
Rapid medical response, but injuries proved fatal
Medical staff at the ground responded immediately and an ambulance arrived shortly afterwards. Gjana was taken to the Intensive Care Unit of the General Hospital of Kavala with a serious head injury and placed under intensive care.
Despite treatment, the teenager died on the morning of Tuesday, September 29, 2026. The club that fielded him, Vyronas Kavala, announced his death and expressed mourning.
“With unbearable grief and unspeakable sorrow, the sporting family of Vyronas Kavala bids farewell to one of its own, Vyronas B' player Asllan Gjana—our Ani—who has left so unjustly and prematurely,” the club said in its statement.
The local football community on Thasos and in Kavala reacted with shock; authorities and regional football bodies are expected to review the circumstances, including the proximity of fencing and the safety arrangements at the pitch.
