Trump cancels live broadcast of execution of U.S. soldier Nidal Hasan

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the execution of Nidal Hasan will not be broadcast live, reversing a decision the Pentagon publicized last week.

Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social:

“Nidal Malik Hasan, a former major in the U.S. Army who became a traitor, is a very bad and evil man who killed 13 people, including a pregnant soldier who died along with her unborn child, and seriously wounded 32 other innocent people.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the administration of Barack Hussein Obama, intercepted electronic communications between Hasan and the radical Yemeni-American preacher Anwar al-Awlaki. When the FBI counterterrorism task force reviewed the communications, investigators concluded that Hasan's email did not pose a threat.

That move by the Obama administration was later judged to be one of the key intelligence failures,”

He added that the execution will go ahead as planned by firing squad, but it will not be televised. Immediate family members of the victims will still be allowed to attend in person if they wish.

Pentagon change and public debate

The White House statement reverses a Pentagon announcement from the previous week that had proposed livestreaming what would be the first execution of a U.S. service member convicted of a terrorism offense. Trump’s decision removes the planned public broadcast while keeping the method and the right of victims' relatives to attend.
