Trump: Progress on opening a US military base in Poland
Trump said the base would be a historic step for the US–Poland alliance and that the site will be announced soon.
President Donald Trump said there has been progress toward opening a permanent U.S. military base in Poland, praising the "bold leadership" of Polish president Karol Nawrocki.
"If this happens, the location will be announced very soon. This will be a historic step for the great alliance between the United States and Poland," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Poland pressing for stronger presence on NATO's eastern flank
The announcement comes amid Warsaw's push for a reinforced allied presence after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Polish officials have repeatedly called for permanent U.S. and NATO forces on the alliance's eastern edge.
In June, Poland's defence minister Vladislav Koshchinska-Kamish met with U.S. Secretary of Defense Pit Hegset. After that meeting, Koshchinska-Kamish said the U.S. Department of Defense was open to Poland's proposal for a permanent American military presence on Polish soil.
Trump did not give further operational details in his post. He said only that, should the plan go ahead, the exact base location would be announced "very soon," and framed the move as a landmark for U.S.–Poland ties.
