President Donald Trump defended comments by Vice President J.D. Vance and downplayed the ongoing conflict with Iran during a conversation in the Oval Office, saying the situation carries little weight for the United States.
When reporters asked Trump to respond to Vance’s earlier remark that the clash with Iran was not “a war,” the president backed that line, framing U.S. military action as limited in scope and effect.

“I can understand what he is saying,” Trump said, and added that American strikes in what he called this war — “which has been going on for six months” — are now “sporadic.”
He went further in characterizing the dispute’s importance to Washington: “I call it a military conflict because for us it is a trivial matter,” the president told journalists in the Oval Office.
Trump’s comments echo and amplify the vice president’s remarks and signal a rhetorical approach that treats the campaign against Iran as limited and of low strategic priority for the administration.
