Trump may ask Europe to release diesel reserves and is weighing an export ban

President Donald Trump said he could ask European governments to free up part of their diesel stockpiles while weighing a possible ban on U.S. exports of the fuel as world supplies tighten.

Administration officials press allies as prices climb

Trump's comment followed an appeal from his finance secretary, Scott Bessent, who urged European countries to prepare and release reserves immediately. Bessent warned that "American farmers, truck drivers and businesses must not carry the burden."

U.S. officials have signaled they may restrict diesel shipments after prices surged, a development the administration attributes to the war in Iran.

The matter has domestic political stakes: fuel costs are a prominent concern for American voters ahead of the midterm elections, increasing pressure on the White House to act.

According to discussions reported by officials, the United Kingdom held talks with European partners yesterday about a coordinated release of diesel reserves in case Washington moves to curb exports.

The United States is a major global supplier of diesel, exporting roughly 1.2 to 1.5 million barrels a day. Experts caution that an American export ban could push prices still higher in other countries and unsettle already tight markets.
