Trump signals possibility of a deal with Iran ahead of congressional elections
He linked lower oil prices to market expectations of no war and posted his view on Truth Social; J.D. Vance said conversations have made "some progress."

President Donald Trump said a deal with Iran is possible as he sought to frame the diplomatic outlook ahead of the upcoming congressional elections. Trump linked the prospect of an accord to recent moves in global oil markets and posted his comments on Truth Social.
Oil, ratings and voter unease
“Oil prices are falling like a rock, almost $10 per barrel, which is a record because people believe there will be no war with Iran. Iran wants a deal, and as soon as possible. That could happen,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, asserting that markets were reacting to expectations that a broader conflict might be avoided.
The president has seen his approval ratings slip recently, and polls indicate many voters are unhappy with his handling of both the conflict with Iran and the economy — concerns that could shape turnout and choices at the ballot box.
Senator J.D. Vance delivered a similar message, saying U.S. and Iranian officials had made “some progress” in talks. “The Iranians are always a bit unpredictable, and the president, as he often says, retains military and non-military options. But we have definitely made some progress. We'll see if we can make even more,” Vance said.
Earlier, while standing near the White House reflecting pool, Trump silently mouthed “no” when a reporter asked whether he would again order strikes on Iran after the congressional elections.
The comments come as voters weigh the domestic economic outlook — including the recent drop in energy prices — together with the risks of escalation abroad, making foreign policy a prominent issue in the run-up to the vote.
