Trump: Agreement reached to disarm Hamas and withdraw Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that an agreement has been reached for the complete disarmament of Hamas and other militant groups in the Gaza Strip, and said the move is part of a previously unveiled 20-point peace plan.

Trump posted the announcement on his social network Truth Social and described the deal as central to reshaping governance in Gaza. "This agreement is a key step toward Gaza finally being governed by a new Palestinian government that will work with the Peace Committee to help the Palestinian people," he wrote.

The Peace Committee confirms agreement

The Peace Committee, an international body created under the terms of the plan to oversee the end of the war, said Hamas "has agreed to a detailed plan for implementing the next phases of the ceasefire in Gaza." The committee said the accord is the product of months of negotiations.

Trump called the phased implementation a major turning point. "When the disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw, and international stabilization forces will work with the new Palestinian police to ensure that Gaza is safe for its residents and its neighbors," he said, and added that under the agreement the Gaza Strip "will finally be in the hands of a new Palestinian government that will serve its people."

Officials have not released the technical details of the disarmament plan, and neither Israel nor Hamas had commented officially on Trump's statements at the time of the announcement.

Background

The 20-point peace plan, presented last fall, already helped bring about a ceasefire and an exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian detainees. The conflict began on October 7, 2023, after a Hamas attack on Israel that killed about 1,200 Israelis. Israel then launched a major military offensive on the Gaza Strip; according to the Gaza Ministry of Health more than 70,000 Palestinians have died in the fighting.

Trump and backers of the plan say the phased disarmament and the presence of international stabilization forces are intended to prevent Gaza from being used again as a base for attacks on Israel and to create conditions for a new Palestinian authority to govern the enclave.
