An aide in the White House stated that the order directs the Department of the Interior and Secretary Dag Burgum to implement the renaming.
Administration officials announced the measure without providing further details about timing or how the new name will be applied on maps and official documents.
About the lake
Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. It lies on the border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York.
The lake’s cross-border location means any formal, lasting change to its name would touch on cartography, signage and potentially international practice around place names.
