Trump signs order expanding access to tax‑exempt red diesel

President Donald Trump signed an executive order expanding access to tax-exempt "red diesel" at a campaign rally in Nebraska, removing the restriction that the fuel be used only in off-road vehicles and allowing anyone to purchase it without paying the usual fuel tax.

The move, announced onstage, means that the dyed diesel commonly reserved for agricultural and industrial equipment will be available more broadly in the civilian market under the executive action.

What is "red diesel" and why it matters

Red diesel is diesel fuel marked with a red dye to indicate it receives preferential tax treatment because it is intended for off-road uses. By lifting the off-road-only condition, the executive order effectively opens that tax break to a wider group of buyers.

During the Nebraska event Trump admitted he was not familiar with the fuel. "I don't know what it is, but whatever it is, it must be really good," he said to the crowd.

The announcement comes as gasoline prices have climbed to record highs amid what the president described as the war against Iran, a development that has put additional pressure on the Republican Party just weeks before the midterm elections.
