Trump proposes renaming the Strait of Hormuz to 'Trump's Strait'

President Donald Trump on Sunday suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself, posting the proposal on his social network Truth Social and framing it as a consequence of recent U.S. actions in the area.

“Now that it is under U.S. control, should we change the name of the Strait of Hormuz to 'Trump's Strait'?” he wrote on the platform.

Proposal follows a pattern of unilateral renamings

The remark comes less than a week after Trump signed an executive order that renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America and instructed the Interior Department and its secretary to update the lake's new name in the official geographic names database. Canada rejected that change, while Google and Apple updated their maps for users in the United States.

Observers noted it is unclear how the president would attempt to change the name of a strategic waterway thousands of miles from U.S. shores, one that is a long-standing point of contention between the United States and Iran.

The suggestion adds to a string of high-profile symbolic moves by the president in recent days, raising questions about how such renamings are implemented and how other countries and global tech platforms will respond.
