Trump: US could stay in Iran and keep the oil

U.S. President Donald Trump, during his visit to Ireland, said that the US could remain present in Iran and "keep the oil," drawing a parallel with deals related to Venezuela.

Speaking before the Irish golf championship, he reiterated that he expects the war with Iran to end during this year and expressed confidence that it could happen immediately after the midterm elections in November. According to him, once the conflict ends, fuel prices "would drop drastically."

Conditions and options

Trump emphasized that he will sign only a "real deal" and that he will not accept a "deal that means nothing," adding that "Iran is constantly calling for peace talks." He presented the option to stay as one of the possible directions to protect American interests.

On the possibility of staying, he said: "At the end of the day, we will decide to leave (Iran), unless we decide to stay and keep the oil like in the case of Venezuela," Trump said.

The remarks were part of his appearance in Ireland, where the president linked the outcome of the conflict to the timing of American domestic politics and the upcoming elections.
