Inter Miami coach Kily Gonzalez publicly endorsed Lionel Messi for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, saying unequivocally that the trophy should go to the Argentine captain.
Gonzalez made the remarks after Inter Miami's 2-0 victory over Cruz Azul in the Champions Cup, a game in which the 39-year-old forward scored and provided the assist for the second goal.

Speaking about Messi's form and impact, Gonzalez called him "number one" and added that there is no other player like him. He pointed to Messi's influence at the World Cup and his wider significance for people around the world as reasons why the award is deserved.
Co-owner David Beckham has also voiced his support for Messi, saying previously that the Argentine deserves to be named the best.
The Ballon d'Or ceremony is scheduled for October 26, 2026, in London.
