Third malaria-related death reported near Frankfurt Airport

German authorities reported a third fatality from malaria in the vicinity of Frankfurt Airport, describing the event as an extremely rare appearance of a tropical disease linked to air travel.

One of two infected Schwanheim residents died in hospital

City officials said the victim was one of two residents of the Schwanheim neighbourhood, located north of the airport, who had contracted malaria. The patient died while receiving care at the citys university hospital.

"Both people contracted the parasite that causes malaria, although they had not travelled to a region where malaria is endemic and did not work at the airport," the authorities said.

Local officials noted the unusual nature of the infections because neither person had the typical risk history of travel to endemic areas or occupational exposure at the airport.

The authorities have not released further clinical details about the surviving infected resident or the precise circumstances of transmission.
