A three-year-old girl suffered serious injuries after an elevator door unexpectedly opened and closed while she was riding with her mother in a residential building in the Radishani neighbourhood of Skopje.

The incident was reported to police days later. "On 24.08.2026 at 20:00 hours at S.V.R. Skopje, E.Z.(30) from Skopje reported that on 22.08.2026 at around 18:15, while she and her children were in the elevator of a residential building in the Radishani area, the elevator door suddenly opened and closed, whereby her three‑year‑old daughter was pulled and sustained serious bodily injuries, confirmed at the Public Health Institution 'St. Naum Ohridski' Skopje. Measures are being taken to clarify the case," the Ministry of Interior said.

According to the statement, the child was taken to medical care and the injuries were documented at the Public Health Institution "St. Naum Ohridski" in Skopje.

Police say they have opened an investigation and are carrying out measures to establish the exact circumstances of the accident. The identity of the reporting person was given as E.Z., age 30, from Skopje.

The case highlights concerns about elevator safety in residential buildings; authorities did not provide immediate details about the elevator's maintenance history or the exact nature of the mechanical failure.

Officials asked that further information about the child's condition and the progress of the investigation be released through competent institutions as inquiries continue.
