Three killed in drone attacks in Belgorod Oblast, bus hit

In drone attacks on Russia's border Belgorod Oblast that took place yesterday, a bus was hit and at least three people were killed and 19 were injured, the Russian Ministry of Defence said.

According to the statement, the bus was struck during shelling in the town of Shebekino, near the border with Ukraine; eighteen of the 19 injured passengers were taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, a drone attack on a commercial facility in a village near the border claimed two lives, while one person was killed in another attack near Belgorod.

Reactions and context

The spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, said that the recent attacks show that Ukraine is targeting Russian public transport with "maniacal consistency", describing them as retaliation for, as she assessed, the growing failures at the front.

Meanwhile, Russian authorities in Donetsk Oblast said that five people were injured in what they described as a drone attack on a bus.

Russia also accused Ukraine of last month's attack on a bus carrying Belarusian children who were travelling to a summer camp; according to Russian reports at the time, one woman was killed and six children were injured. Russian officials say that such incidents are part of systematic attacks on buses in several regions, but no independent evidence was provided in the statements.
