UEFA Rejects Boycott Threat, Will Seek Infantino's Resignation

UEFA and its 55 national federations withdrew the threat to boycott FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, after being reassured that FIFA would not revive the controversial proposal to sell stakes in the tournament.

The decision to lift the threat was made ahead of UEFA's executive committee meeting and the majority of the presidents of the national federations in Monaco on Thursday, where officials stressed that two preconditions had to be met beforehand.

The first precondition was met when FIFA at the end of July withdrew the proposal to sell shares in the main competitions. The second, according to UEFA, concerns the level of guarantees: "guarantees must be given that such attempts to undermine the game in this way will never happen again," UEFA said.

Strong pressure on Infantino

Despite rejecting the idea of a boycott, UEFA leaders announced they will step up measures against Gianni Infantino because of his "plan for selling the World Cup." It is expected that a campaign will also be presented in Monaco to call for his resignation.

European national teams are due to travel to Poland on Monday for the U-20 Women's World Cup, and UEFA says that the withdrawal of the threat removed the immediate danger that their participation would be jeopardized.

Officials described the withdrawn initiative as undermining the foundations of the sport and said relations will remain conditional until firm guarantees for the future are provided.
