Hurricane Isaias kills four and leaves more than 600,000 without power in southern US

At least four people were killed and more than 600,000 lost electricity after Hurricane Isaias struck parts of the southern United States with strong winds and heavy rain.

Two of the fatalities occurred in Florida and two in Alabama; officials said some victims were killed when trees fell onto houses.

Impact and emergency response

The storm hit the Florida coast with winds reaching up to 168 kilometers per hour before it weakened and was reclassified as a post-tropical cyclone. The severe weather produced flooding, damaged homes and toppled trees across the region.

Authorities in Florida, Alabama and Georgia declared states of emergency as utility companies reported widespread outages affecting more than 600,000 people. Rescue crews carried out operations to evacuate and assist residents trapped or otherwise endangered by the storm.

Meteorologists warned that heavy rainfall and flood risks would continue in parts of the southeastern United States even as the system was expected to gradually diminish in strength.
