Macedonia to add two City Train lines by end of 2027

Macedonian Railways – Infrastructure announced that two additional lines of the "City Train" project are planned to enter service by the end of 2027 or, at the latest, in early 2028.

The project documentation for both routes is still being prepared. According to the company's director, Siniša Ivanovski, detailed design work is expected to be completed by the end of October.

One of the new routes is planned to run from Volkovo via Gjorche Petrov and Skopje North to the main railway station in Skopje, covering roughly 18 kilometres. The other line would link Miladinovci, Ilinden and Madzari with the central station and is estimated at about 20 kilometres in length.

Timeline and construction outlook

Officials say the two lines are part of the next phase of the City Train rollout and, if design and procurement proceed on schedule, both should be operational within the stated 2027–early-2028 window.

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski also addressed an unrelated law-enforcement issue, calling on Bulgaria to hand over a person wanted by North Macedonian authorities. "We have an arrest warrant for that person and I expect our partners to act in accordance with our partnership," Mickoski said today in response to journalists' questions about Simeon Mihailov. Mihailov was sentenced in North Macedonia to 12 years in prison but fled before serving his term; he has since appeared on Bulgarian television and at protests in Sofia.

Separately, firefighters reported they have contained a five-kilometre fire line and said the blaze will not reach the nearby village after crews cut the firebreak.
