September 6: Feast of Saint Eutychius, protector of travellers and companioned by angels

On September 6 the Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Eutychius, a lesser-known but powerful martyr who, though not counted among the original Seventy Apostles, is remembered for his fervent faith, sufferings and apostolic zeal.

According to church tradition, Eutychius was a disciple of Saint John the Theologian and Saint Paul. His life is told through accounts of extraordinary incidents: a guardian angel accompanied him on his travels; while imprisoned he was nourished with heavenly bread; and when his body was tortured ‘‘an unusual, pleasant fragrance’’ rose from his wounds up to the moment of his martyrdom in Sevastopol.

Why believers honour him

For the faithful, Eutychius stands as a symbol of steadfast devotion and a living witness that the bond between people and celestial powers remains unbroken, especially when the soul is pure and open to good. His story has been preserved as an example that angels can be present to help in the darkest hours.

Traditionally Eutychius is regarded as the protector of travellers and missionaries. Because he himself journeyed with a companion angel, he is invoked by those on the road, those who are in movement, or anyone embarking on a new life path.

He is also called upon in times of spiritual and physical trial: those facing injustice, severe illness, inner struggles or temptation seek his intercession for endurance and inner strength.

On September 6 many believers observe simple practices meant to invite blessing and calm: a private prayer to one’s guardian angel, lighting a candle and asking protection for family and health, speaking out personal intentions, and performing acts of charity toward the poor. The day is also traditionally seen as one to avoid harsh words and quarrels and to reject fear and pessimism.
